Background
ASRI plans next steps for growing portfolio of distinctive shopping centers, hotels, residential and commercial spaces
Agung Sedayu Realestat Indonesia (ASRI) is one of the country’s leading shopping mall operators, with a portfolio of vibrant and distinctive mixed use developments including residential, retail, leisure, hospitality, and commercial property. In the capital city Jakarta, ASRI, which is a subsidiary of the Agung Sedayu Group, operates four international chain hotels, four residential developments, three office towers, and five shopping and leisure complexes.
To improve safety and security across all five malls and leisure complexes—and to drive profitability—ASRI wanted to undertake a root-and-branch upgrade of its video surveillance systems. The company also wanted to reap benefits from the latest advances in AI-powered video analytics including highly accurate people counting integrated with ASRI’s own centralized database.
Challenge
Proof of concept demonstration to highlight the best and most competitive solution
As well as expanding internal and external surveillance coverage and eliminating blind spots with high performance HD cameras, the upgrade required the retention of several groups of legacy third-party camera brands, to reduce waste and costs. New cameras were needed to deliver high quality image and data capture while mounted on high ceilings across ASRI’s malls.
All five malls needed to be cost-effectively connected at ASRI’s centralized control room to give operators complete domain awareness and management of all devices. The project also called for increased data storage from twenty four days to two months using NVRs with the protection of inherent failover, and the ability to backup data for an additional month.
A scalable approach for video analytics was also needed; in particular, ASRI wanted people counting data from each of its locations to be aggregated to its centralized database, to enable more efficient analysis of activity, and better understanding of footfall trends over time.
Addressing these challenges, following a price competitive bid and a successful proof of concept as well as the need to be competitive on costs, ASRI asked PT Mandiri Cipta Integrasi (MCI) to deliver the upgrade using the latest IDIS technology.
Solution
IDIS allows affordable system expansion, with easy aggregation of people counting data
The upgraded solution comprises over 250 IDIS 5MP bullet cameras and dome cameras, delivering forensic image capture in all lighting conditions, integrated with the existing third- party cameras via the enterprise-level IDIS Solution Suite VMS. The upgrade strengthens ASRI’s security and safety posture with intuitive controls and powerful tools for monitoring and managing surveillance operations across all five malls from its control room, using a third-party video wall.
Highly accurate people counting, along with options to use heat maps, queue management and occupancy monitoring, is provided by fifteen strategic cameras using IDIS AI-in-the Box for Retail (DV-1304) devices. These flexible 4-channel add-on devices deliver actionable insights and were easily scaled up across the five malls to meet ASRI’s intelligence requirements, without license fees or the need for costly retail analytics software.
The video footage and analytics data are stored on eight robust IDIS 64-channel DR-8564 NVRs which support RAID 5 with eight hot-swappable 10TB HDDs for rapid and efficient maintenance. The IDIS NVR-system provides two months of storage, while ASRI backs up data for an additional month, using the company’s own NAS devices to easily and cost-effectively meet the extended three month retention requirement.
IDIS also developed log collector software, which was tailored for the project and provided cost-free to support seamless integration of people counting data from the NVRs to ASRI’s third-party relational database.
Results and benefits
A future-proofed solution that optimizes safety, security, and business development strategies
The upgraded surveillance solution now equips the security control team to provide the most efficient security and safety monitoring across all five malls; and it allows centralized handling and analysis of footfall data and other business intelligence metrics.
Understanding and measuring customer behaviors and preferences will support ASRI and its retail partners in improving their offerings to consumers. It will allow them to make more informed decisions around marketing, resource allocation, and business investments—ultimately supporting greater profitability.
The scalability of IDIS Solution Suite also ensures future proofing and flexibility going forward. In the next project phase, it will be easy for ASRI to integrate AI-powered facial recognition software and store video data with a local cloud storage provider, offering additional flexibility in the way authorized personnel access and manage footage and analytics data.
" As we invest in our offering of high-end retail, leisure, residential, and lifestyle venues for discerning consumers, IDIS technology gives us the most dependable, powerful, and sustainable platform for video monitoring and storage. Our new video infrastructure supports safety, security, and better decision-making across all our malls."
